Did Rihanna Snag A Vogue Cover?

We’ve said it before, we’ll say it again — we really don’t like to trade in rumors here at Styleite, but sometimes you come across on that’s just too good to pass up. And today, that rumor is that Rihanna shot a Vogue cover with Annie Leibovitz — and it’s coming straight from the horse’s mouth.

The singer tweeted that she “Just wrapped my first American Vogue cover shoot with Annie Leibovitz…Rah! #SEXY,” but by the time the story had gotten around to the good folks at Celebitchy, the link to the tweet went dead. Luckily, intrepid tweeter @sara_mail managed to retweet before Rihanna (or someone involved with her twitter feed) took the tweet down.

This, of course, leaves us with a few questions, the first being: is this even real? Would Rihanna lie to us, or is someone out there just blowing couture-colored smoke? We don’t think anyone with as many followers or rabid fans would lie about a cover as important as Vogue, but in fashion, stranger things have happened.

Assuming the rumor is true, well, whither Lady Gaga? Back in November, rumor had it that Gaga was slated for the March cover, but there’s been nary a peep heard from Vogue since then. That said, the timing of the shoot suggests that Rihanna could be scheduled for an April, if not a May cover, which leaves plenty of room for Gaga as well.

Of course, it’s not as though a Rihanna cover wouldn’t be a landmark in its own right. The singer is interesting, definitely has opinions about the fashion industry and has a celebrated — if sometimes hard to figure out — sense of style all her own. She’d also be only the fifteenth black woman to grace the magazine’s cover (and we mean a cover, not a lame foldover deal where you have to do origami to see any appreciable amount of melanin) in its 118-year history.

So yes, we’d be excited about a Rihanna cover. We’re sure Vogue is excited to have her — and who wouldn’t be? Now we just have wait and see.
