Sequins must be way more in than we realized. The ruby slippers Judy Garland wore as Dorothy in The Wizard Of Oz are on the auction block — and you’ll never guess how much they might go for.
Reuters reports the shoes, which everyone remembers as the ones Dorothy won (after a fashion) from The Wicked Witch of the East, will go up for auction on Dec. 16 in Los Angeles as part of a memorobilia sale. We don’t know what else is in the sale, but it might actually not matter — the ruby slippers, which are covered in red sequins and have red soles (like Louboutins!) are expected to fetch between $2 million and $3 million.
The shoes are said to be in mint condition and are marked “#7 Judy Garland.” They are one of four pairs of the sparkly kicks that were made for the movie. One pair belongs to a private collector, the other is on display at the Smithsonian, and one was stolen from the Judy Garland museum in Minnesota.
So why will this pair fetch so much? Well, they’re easily the most famous pair of shoes in the world today.
“This is the most important film prop in the world. There is nothing more famous,” said the current owner Joe Maddalena. “They are one of the greatest pieces of pop culture in existence.”
Hmm. We wonder how people will react when some of Lady Gaga‘s shoes start going on sale in a few decades.
