American swimmer Ryan Lochte flashed this diamond-studded American flag grill after winning the men’s 400m individual medley Saturday.
But this was one controversial piece of ice — according to this tweet from Wayne Drehs of ESPN, Lochte tried to wear it onto the podium only to be told by an International Olympic Committee official that if he didn’t take it off he wouldn’t receive the piece of ice he really wanted:
Lochte told me he tried to wear his grill on the podium only to have an Olympics official tell him if he did so he wouldn’t get his gold.

Obviously Lochte obliged and took it out rather than be stripped of his medal, but no one stopped him from popping it back in after he got the gold around his neck. If you ask us, the IOC needs to lighten up a bit. The bling was maybe less than classy (and it distracts from those lovely blue eyes of his), but hardly worth withholding a medal that he rightfully won. What do you think of the grill?
