Last week, Women’s Wear Daily published several oddly-timed stories about Paris Fashion Week. One piece by Miles Socha compared Hedi Slimane‘s Saint Laurent debut to Raf Simons‘ Christian Dior ready-to-wear. The general verdict is that everyone loved Simons’ collection, while Slimane’s collection was well-reviewed by retailers, but not so much by critics like Cathy Horyn. Naturally, the crew at Saint Laurent Paris didn’t like the article, so CEO Paul Deneve sent in a letter to the editors at WWD.
The first topic that Deneve brings up is the reviews and says that the ones WWD cited, namely Horyn’s, don’t reflect the same comments made by international press. But Deneve is mostly upset that the “oldest trade journal in the fashion industry” pinned Slimane and Simons together in a “banal rivalry” that “relegate[d] fashion to a sideshow rather than the main event.”
Well, we’re betting that Socha responds in tomorrow’s paper, so stay tuned, folks.
