We’ve been quietly mourning Sally Singer‘s departure from T: The New York Times Style Magazine for almost 24 hours now, but it’s beginning to look like the split was inevitable. Singer was appointed editor-in-chief of the title just over two years ago, but publishers were reportedly impatient for a spike in ad sales that just never came. While executive editor Jill Abramson hailed the “gorgeous visuals, interesting stories and enterprising features” within her former boss’ legacy, these are also seemingly just what did her in.
Details are still sparse, but WWD probed Singer’s tenure for possible grounds for her departure, be it voluntary or requested by her higher-ups. They point to the editor’s desire to make T “a more hyper-intellectual read,” citing pieces like the one on the controversial mosque erected near the site of Ground Zero, and her “downtown vibe,” as shown in spreads like Lana Del Rey lensed by Terry Richardson. But while she was optimistic about advertisers response to a magazine with less fashion and more world issues, it looks like the big money luxury companies just weren’t biting.
The fall fashion issue showed a concerted effort to be more mainstream, with gorgeous, crowd-pleaser editorials starring cover girl Emma Watson and Miranda Kerr shot by Orlando Bloom. But it looks like even the combined efforts of Victoria’s Secret, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings couldn’t change anyone’s mind.
