While Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie may have made a splash at the royal wedding with their Phillip Treacy toppers, their mother Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, made an even bigger one by not being invited. And now she’s opened up to Oprah (as most of O’s guests are wont to do) by revealing that she watched the extravaganza from a jungle in Thailand and comparing herself (and her situation) to the late Princess Diana.
“I was not invited,” she told Winfrey. “I chose to go and be in Thailand in a place called Camelia… the jungle embraced me.”
As for the snub, Ferguson said it wasn’t just the fact that she was actively not invited, but the memories of her own wedding that made her sad. “It was so hard because the last bride up that aisle was me.” That said, she admits that she only had her own decisions to blame. “I sort of wore a hairshirt and beat myself up most of the day… I did spend a good three hours on that.”
But it’s the last of Ferguson’s observations might be the toughest to swallow. “I sort of really love the feeling that sort of Diana and I both weren’t there,” she confessed to Oprah. “But I’m here to say how proud she would have been.”
Ferguson’s episode airs today at 4PM.
