Last week, Selena Gomez got lots of attention for her gilded shift at the MTV Movie Awards. But this week, Selena’s getting lots of (unwanted) attention for the bindi she wore during her performance of “Come and Get It.”
President of the Universal Society of Hinduism Rajan Zed explained that the “auspicious religious symbol,” traditionally worn by married women at the site of the sixth chakra, should not be “thrown around loosely” or for consumer fashion. He told WENN:
“The bindi on the forehead is an ancient tradition in Hinduism and has religious significance…Selena should apologize and then she should get acquainted with the basics of world religions.”
While Selena is apprently the first to be publicly chided for her display of the religious symbol, this is not the first time stars have teetered the lines with cultural or religious offenses.
