“Who’s my plus one to events? I don’t get invited to these events!” Sharon Socol joked Tuesday night at a Barneys New York party. In fact, the night was all about Socol, who is married to former Barneys CEO Howard Socol. As his plus one to many an event over the years, Sharon snapped candid photos at parties, shows, backstage — you name it. She compiled the crème de la crème into her first book “Plus One: An Outsider’s Photographic Journey Into the World of Fashion”, and of course, we there there to celebrate with her.
“But if i do, it’s always my husband. And if he can’t go, then it’s my daughters,” Sharon clarified. Howard was indeed on the ninth floor of the department store where the party was held, but he took the backseat while his wife was in the spotlight. That, however, wasn’t always the case.
“The fashion really came as a result of my being with Howard, and wanting to share what he did,” she explained. “I knew that I needed to feel comfortable, and my camera helps me feel comfortable, and gave me my own entre into the world.”
While she might still consider herself a fashion outsider, designers like Thakoon Panichgul, Yigal Azrouël, and Tommy Hilfiger, and the night’s co-hosts Diane von Furstenberg and Narciso Rodriguez showed their support. Though not everyone showed up with their plus one of choice like Sharon.
“[This is] my ghost friend!” Panichgul laughed as he gestured at the air next to him. The designer was flying solo for the night, but admitted, “I’m usually the plus one for somebody else!” He wasn’t by himself for long though, and a half-second after we stepped away from him, fellow designer Richard Chai swooped in for a bear hug.
Azrouël, whose plus one could have well been jewelry designer Eddie Borgo judging from their intimate chat, joked: “It depends what it is, but I always have a plus one. Lately, it’s been my assistant!”
