Simon Doonan, creative director of Barney’s New York is a visionary and a taste maker. He’s an author, a brilliant window dresser, and a columnist. Oh, to be a fly on the wall of his office.
Christie’s took that desire and ran with it for the Green Auction: A Bid to Save the Earth, which ends today. The catalogue was jam packed with fashionable lots including lunch with Vera Wang, evening dresses designed by Armani, and Harry Winston jewelry. Most appealing to us? Lunch with Doonan — and apparently the public agrees.
Bidding ends today and as of last night, the Doonan package — which includes lunch with him, a preview of his holiday windows, and a $5,000 gift card to Barney’s — was going for $60,000. That’s the priciest of all the lots, including a day with Hugh Jackman, which is currently at $8000, and a date with Jude Law which has a going rate of one $1,000 bid.
A sexy date with Jude Law? Or lunch with Doonan… We must admit, it’s a tough choice. But has all this attention gone to Doonan’s head?
“I always assumed Jude Law and Hugh Jackman had infinitely more wattage than me, but clearly I have to reevaluate,” Doonan told WWD. “It hasn’t changed me at all, but I am going to have my office lined in a leopard carpet and wear a smoking jacket and ascot to work. I am going to make it worth it and pull out all the stops. I will do some serious shimmying when the lunch comes around.”
Upwards of $60,000 to see Doonan shimmy down the aisles at Fred’s? Totally reasonable.
