Harper’s BAZAAR went for a major fashion trifecta for its September issue having cover star Sarah Jessica Parker photographed by Terry Richardson and interviewed by Cathy Horyn. The results on both fronts are just as awe-inspiring as you’d expect with SJP looking ageless in a strappy, shimmery gold sequin Marc Jacobs dress on the cover, and her getting uncharacteristically candid about her marriage and family inside the profile.
She opened up about enigmatic relationship with husband Matthew Broderick:
“Matthew and I come from a different time and place. When we were young people, all we ever wanted was to be good working actors. We didn’t think of fame or money because, honestly, money was never part of the dream. It was to work in theater, to be around those people whose work I was in total awe of. I never saw the trappings; nobody talked about being a celebrity. So when our marriage came up in conversation, it wouldn’t occur to us that we were obligated to respond to allegations or gossip. You have to be a bit circumspect, but you also have to take up a position, and you have to stick to it. There’s also the reality of your life. I love Matthew Broderick. Call me crazy, but I love him. We can only be in the marriage we are. We’re very devoted to our family and our lives. I love our life. I love that he’s the father of my children, and it’s because of him that there’s this whole other world that I love.”
We’re a little perplexed by the fact that she feels obligated to call herself crazy for loving her husband (he’s as close to Ferris Bueller as it gets), but then again, we’ve never been under the merciless magnifying glass that is the mass media. Another anecdote we loved learning was that her twin daughters might be budding Suri Cruises:
“They come to me and say, ‘I don’t want to wear that; it’s not beautiful.’ I don’t know where these ideas come from because we don’t talk a lot about it in our house. We don’t hold up examples of what’s feminine, what’s pretty.”
Unfortunately for SJP, as soon as her twins come of age, they’ll soon realize that they’re kind of like Carrie Bradshaw scions and will definitely be clothes horses whether she likes it or not. And we have a sneaking suspicion that although she recently told Express U.K., that she’s “not into fashion as people expect me to be,” that she’s simply just trying to downplay her Sex and the City identity. After all, she looks far too at home in the accompanying fashion spread wearing one of Gucci’s Fall 2013 glam rock gowns. Those are not for the sartorially faint of heart.
