Splashing Paint All Over Your Expensive Handbag Is Still a Big Trend

Burberry's latest handbag causes a stir on the LFW runway.

Did Burberry rip off Kanye West?

We seriously doubt Christopher Bailey was pulling a leather jogging pants with the hand painted Bloomsbury bags he debuted at London Fashion Week today, but it’s impossible not to draw comparisons to the mutilated George Condo-painted Birkin West trolled Kim Kardashian with last Christmas.

Burberry’s new design is a top-handle carrier big enough to fit all your art school supplies, and has been fittingly decorated with hand painted brush strokes. Others came in tufted velvet with carpet weaves. But what’s more likely to piss off Yeezus is the reaction to the respective handbags. While the internet was like “yeah nah” regarding the Birkin — something he totally foresaw, by the way — the Twitter response to the Bloomsbury is overwhelmingly positive.

Another somebody unlikely to be loving Burberry’s latest piece of arm candy is Karl Lagerfeld. The scribbled-on backpacks he debuted at Chanel‘s art student-inspired Spring 2014 show were crucified for looking shitty/costing $3,400. “Picture a young art student spray-painting the blank canvas of a classic backpack and then personalizing it with loops of haphazardly woven ropes and heavy chains,” the show notes read. Punk [appropriation]’s not dead?

Regardless of who thought of it first, painting all over expensive accessories is very du jour. “Artrepreneur” Delano Brown has made an incredibly decent living as an in-demand clothing customizer, taking high-fashion pieces from Balenciaga and Givenchy — and, yes, Hèrmes — and giving them a painterly DIY job. ““Not everybody is going to understand a $50,000 canvas,” he said, “but clothing is something everybody understands,” he told the New York Times last year. Nicola Formichetti and artist Travis W. Simon have also made over Hèrmes’ most famous (and most expensive) bag.

It might seem counterintuitive, but splashing paint all over your priciest accessory could be quite an economically sound idea. At least there’s less chance of it getting stolen.
