Stefano Pilati Reveals Blogger Phobia At YSL’s Cruise Presentation

Stefano Pilati unveiled his 2012 cruise collection for Yves Saint Laurent on the 20th floor of a midtown office building Wednesday to an intimate crowd that included Grace Coddington, Cathy Horyn, Roberta Myers, and Sally Singer, with whom we rode up in the elevator. Swoon. Naturally, we have thoughts on the collection, but we also have thoughts on the interview he gave Women’s Wear Daily before the show, in which he claimed to be “very scared” of bloggers.

Pilati has had to handle probably more than his fair share of criticism as well as no shortage of rumors that he was leaving (or being pushed out of) his post at YSL, which is how the topic of criticism came up. With critics, generally speaking, Pilati says he tries to “understand where the negative reviews are coming from” but with bloggers, well, he’s a little less comfortable.

Pilati is just as vocal when it comes to the blogging crowd. “I pay attention to all of them and I’m very scared,” he says. “Because who are these people? I would like to sit with them and ask them where they come from. Because it’s very easy to judge from your bed. At the same time, I’m fascinated. I’m fascinated by this era and this medium. If people are thirsty about fashion, I like to have a dialogue, but now it’s not a two-way dialogue; it’s a one-way dialogue.”

We can’t help but point out the irony that there was a very solid group of “bloggers” in attendance yesterday, including Fashionista’s Lauren Sherman and HuffPost Style’s new associate editor Ellie Krupnick, which doesn’t do much for his “blogging from bed” argument. But we understand where Pilati is coming from — kind of. It isn’t easy for bloggers to have a two way conversation with the likes of Stefano Pilati; PR people, if you’re listening, we’re readily available for some dialogue!

As for the clothes, the collection was decidedly nautical, with a liberal sprinkling of poppy flower motifs. There were blousey shorts matched with blousey tops and midriff baring jumpers followed by a pair of printed maxi dresses. Lindsey Wixson made an appearance and we couldn’t help but notice all the models had a Wixson-esque look about them — mainly a result of the preponderance of bee-stung lips painted in a snappy hot pink. It was a happy, cruise-y, and decidedly ladylike collection — and the perfect way to spend a sunny, summer morning. Maybe next time we’ll have a chance to prove to Pilati in person that we don’t wear PJs (all day) and rarely blog from bed. It’s just not comfortable.
