Considering that her father is Sir Paul McCartney, we tend to imagine Stella McCartney’s campaigns with a soundtrack, and this season we’ve been thrown for a loop, settling on Kendrick Lamar’s “Swimming Pools (Drank)”, as oversized plaid coat-festooned Chiharu Okunugi submerges herself in, you guessed it, a swimming pool. Perhaps, it’s a stretch, but McCartney deemed the campaign surreal, so we’re just kind of going with it.
The spread, fittingly shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, was captured in London, and in addition to Okunugi’s chlorine-soaked moment, we see Suvi Koponen on the streets of the city in another one of the collection’s generously-cut coats, one of the bright purple variety. She is surrounded by a small swarm of what appear to be posh private school students, whose uniforms also happen to be Jimi Hendrix’s choice hue.
McCartney told WWD:
“This season I wanted to capture the spirit of the city and the streets; an expression of urban life and real, everyday moments. We wanted to have a sense of fun and freedom, then contrast it with something slightly unexpected. There is a bit of surrealism, which may even be a bit strange.”
The phantasmagorical images will appear in the ad-stacked September issues of Vogue, Harper’s BAZAAR, ELLE, W, Interview, and V.
