Have you heard of Levi’s ex-girlfriend jeans? They’re the denim company’s menswear answer to their popular boyfriend jeans for ladies. They’re also probably the skinniest dude jeans in the world. And Stephen Colbert is not amused.
Yes, that Stephen Colbert! He certainly has a lot of thoughts about jeans (“What are button flys if not a dress shirt for your crotch?”), and actually has some pretty insightful things to say about the state of denim:
The skinnification of the American jeanscape has gone too far! First it was tapered cut, then shrink-to-fit, then slim fit boot cut, then slouchy slim, then skinny fit. Enough, we get it, you’re in a band!
Besides the obscenely skinny silhouette of the ex-girlfriend jean, Colbert also has a problem with the copy on the Levi’s website that reads: “Remember the girlfriend with the great style? Here’s a tribute to her — a fit that’s super-snug allover, an update of the five-pocket classic that’s as skinny as it gets.” As Colbert explains: “Yes, you’re honoring her. By looking like you broke back into her apartment and stole her pants, which I’m sure doesn’t violate the retraining order.” LOL, Stephen! Plus, there’s also the weirdness regarding the fact the women’s version is a boyfriend jean and the men’s version is an ex-girlfriend jean. Wag of the finger, indeed.
As someone who wears skinny jeans on the daily and happens to like boys in bands, I cannot endorse these either! They are just too skinny. Like…legging-level skinny. Also, wearing your ex’s clothing is kind of depressing! Anyway, watch for yourself below. The jean real talk begins at 1:55:
