Did Steven Meisel try to pull a fast one over on the editors at W? Said W editors sure think so, thanks to the alleged resemblance between editorials Meisel did for both W‘s September issue and Vogue Italia‘s August issue.
W was super excited to have gotten Meisel to photograph a 22-page black-and-white spread for the mag. Styled by Edward Enninful, the shoot involved 10 models (including Linda Evangelista and Carolyn Murphy) posed in natural (“before”) and glammed-up (“after”) looks. But then they saw his work for Vogue Italia.
For the Italian fashion tome, Meisel shot only Raquel Zimmermann (who also appears in the W story, by the way), but W thinks the similarities are pretty striking. The photos are also black-and-white, and also involve natural Zimmermann alongside glam Zimmermann. Hmmm. It’s possible Vogue Italia‘s Karl Templer had the same styling ideas as W‘s Enninful, but W is pissed. Some at the glossy even think Meisel used its money to do the Vogue Italia cover shoot.
The fallout will be worth watching. If it damages W’s relationship with Meisel, Tonchi will lose out on a big-name photographer he’s craved for the magazine. If Tonchi doesn’t act, it will demonstrate the lengths a fashion magazine editor will go to appease a photographer who holds considerable influence in the industry.
this is some kind of spaceship or something.
