At first it sounded like it might be similar to The Shops at Target, but WWD reports that the collection, for which the two retailers tapped 24 CFDA designers, will be sold at Target and Neiman Marcus locations — so this is not just a diffusion capsule collection for Target, it’s a truly unprecedented partnership. Every item in the 50-piece collection is under $500, with most in the under-$60 range. The products include everything from clothing to home wares to sporting goods. And the designers? Altuzarra, Band of Outsiders, Robert Rodriguez, Prabal Gurung, Rag & Bone, Rodarte, and Marchesa, just to name a few. Just reading that list gave us heart palpitations.
Target Executive VP of Merchandising Kathee Tesija told WWD:
“We gave the designers a lot of latitude. It will resonate with consumers who shop with Neiman Marcus or Target or both. It will be a diverse mix of exceptionally designed product at great values. Some of the designers chose to create things in their wheelhouse — what they do everyday. And some really wanted to do different things.”
It’s not unusual for lower-end retailers to reach up in order to bring their customers fancy things, but it’s rare (unheard of?) for a luxury retailer to reach down for great products. Needless to say, we can wait to see what this collab has in store (pun intended). Our calendars are already marked for Dec. 1, when the collection hits the shelves!
