Just when you thought Barbie couldn’t get any more fabulous, The Blonds go and puts her in an outfit like this.
The designers collaborated with Mattel on the limited edition “Blond Diamond™” doll to be released in December, who sports a white faux-fur coat, glittery, pink-soled stilettos, and one of their signature blinged-out corsets. The look is a replica of one that walked the runway as part their fall 2008 collection, though the life-size corset ran for $35,000, while the doll retails for a far more budget-friendly $125. As the Times’ On The Runway blog points out, the getup is also right in line with those favored by Phillipe Blond, one half of the downtown design duo.
A Mattel exec remarked that the partnership was another example of the ways the iconic doll “continues to push the envelope.” Though of course, “Barbie doesn’t worry about what other people think.”
The Blonds, on the other hand, do care what their customers think. Currently only serving private clients like Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry, the pair hope this collaboration will put them on the mainstream map. As David Blond explains it:
“A whole different audience, that’s always good for anyone’s business. And that’s the direction we would like to produce — things that are more accessible to more people.”
Bedazzled corsets for all!
this is some kind of spaceship or something.
