The Week In Review: Aug. 22 to 27

Monday started off with a bang — and a lawsuit. Clothing company LA Triumph announced plans to sue Madonna over the Material Girl trademark. Back in the South, a Georgia nail salon decided to charge overweight customers more money for a manicure, and Disneyland offered one of its Muslim employees a pretty offensive alternative to her hijab. But things started looking up in the afternoon — Grace Coddington is penning an autobiography, and the new Miss Universe really, really seems to like the Internet.

Tuesday was a slightly better day overall. We got to watch video from Coco Rocha’s wedding, we got an exclusive photo of Bill and Hillary Clinton dancing on his birthday, and we figured out how Donna Karan managed to wear the same dress all summer. It would have been a perfect day if American Apparel hadn’t come within a hair’s breadth of being delisted from the American Stock Exchange, and if Beyonce hadn’t been accused of stealing Icelandic leggings.

On Wednesday, Naomi Campbell upped the crazy factor by bringing her own hot sauce to a restaurant. Lady Gaga’s male alter-ego, Jo Calderone, landed the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan, and a smattering of top models danced and talked and walked in a PSA for Fashion’s Night Out.

On Thursday we got a glimpse of Martin Scorsese’s commercial for Chanel, and Elle magazine threw down the Fashion’s Night Out gantlet by planning to host its own fashion show the night before the big shopping event. Excited as we were about that, we balked when we found out a British woman had allowed her 14-year-old daughter to tattoo makeup on her face. Later in the day, we met the world’s tallest teen model. She’s from Brazil, which is where Nicole Kidman recently did some promotional work … for a mall.

By the time Friday came around, all we really wanted to do is give away tons of luxurious Guerlain beauty products, but a pesky Summer’s Eve ad suggesting that women could get a raise of they would just douche caught our attention. When the furor over that little misadventure in marketing subsided, we were delighted with one-of-a-kind Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington dolls. And then we wished a very happy birthday to Tom Ford.
