Low-Budget Crime At High Fashion Lincoln Center

During Fashion Week, the tents at Lincoln Center are a visual smorgasbord of delicious, expensive-looking merchandise — displayed both on and off the models and editors who go to the shows. You’d think that if someone was going to try to steal something, they’d go after the big ticket items that almost everyone there flaunts as accessories. As it turns out, whatever criminals there are at Fashion Week haven’t hit the big time yet.

WWD reports that yesterday a photographer and a photographer’s assistant (whether the assistant was the specified photographer’s assistant was not clear) were pickpocketed during the Michael Kors show. When we first heard the story, we thought that they’d be missing fancy lens caps or a deluxe adjustable flash mount, but at the end of the day the two were only missing some cash, a metro card and a credit card.

But those aren’t the only things that have been stolen this week: Model Rumi Neely tweeted that someone stole her Theory fur bag from the Style.com party earlier this week. Styleite editor Verena von Pfetten snapped a picture of an unsupervised Chanel bag being used as a seat holder at the Milly show. It wasn’t taken, but it quite easily could have been.

Fashion shows get really crowded and and sometimes the rooms they’re held in are dark, which only facilitates theft — though it certainly doesn’t justify it. When we have to go to the tents, we tend to keep our bags zipped closed and all our valuables in our front pockets. And for the last two days of shows, we’ll have to keep an even more vigilant eye on our possessions.
