There are few people on this earth who cut a more distinctive figure than David Bowie, but if anyone can impersonate the icon, it is, without question, Tilda Swinton. The otherworldly actress has been styled like Bowie in so many fashion spreads we’re beginning to lose count, emulated some of his signature ‘dos, appeared alongside the musician in his most recent music video, and claimed that they share the same “planetary DNA.”
Tomorrow, rumor out of London has it that she is going to take this cosmic connection a step further and show up at the gala opening of the Victoria and Albert Museum’s hotly anticipated “David Bowie Is” retrospective dressed as the superstar himself. Of course, Bowie can’t attend — or that would be one Bowie too many.
What iconic Bowie look she’ll choose is anyone’s guess, but we’ll have our eyes glued to the Twittersphere for clues tomorrow, and in the meantime, we have plenty of other questions about the evening’s potential happenings: Will Kate Moss, who is also expected at the gala, reprise one of her Bowie-inspired Vogue cover looks? Will Queen Elizabeth make a surprise appearance rocking some “Aladdin Sane” makeup (after all, we already know she looks good in it)? Will Tilda show up with Iman on her arm? And, finally, where oh where will the man of the hour be — unless of course he’ll be showing up in drag, too?
