Tilda Swinton is an awesome, iconic alien. Her look is fully chic, somewhat unsettling, and never ever boring. She also happens to be W‘s weird and wonderful August cover girl.
Swinton is every bit a fashion person as she is an actress. She has a whole slew of fashion friends — from Alber Elbaz to Stefano Pilati to Phoebe Philo — which comes in handy when she has to get dressed up. As she explains: “For someone to know what you need to make you comfortable, they need to know who you are. Having them make clothes for me is like being cooked for by someone who knows what you like to eat.” Yeah, we wish Alber would whip up some Lanvin for us, too!
For her W shoot, Swinton collaborated with her friend Jerry Stafford (who acts as her de facto fashion advisor) to style the Tim Walker-shot photos. She gets inspiration for her style from a myriad of sources, including her father, a former commander of the Queen’s Household Division in London: “From childhood, I remember more about his black patent, gold livery, scarlet-striped legs, and medal ribbons than I do of my mother’s evening dresses. I would rather be handsome, as he is, for an hour than pretty for a week.” Could this be a case of pretty versus cool?!
In fact, Swinton is so cool that she had never even seen the Oscars on TV before she won one, you know, because she “really had no idea that it was so important.” And because she doesn’t have a television. You do you, Tilda. You do you.
And now, pictures!
this is some kind of spaceship or something.
