Former Tory Burch Employee Sues For Discrimination

A career at Tory Burch apparently isn’t all gold logo flats and two-toned sweaters — at least according to Jessica Jones, a former employee at Burch’s flagship store in Los Angeles, who is suing the American designer’s company for unspecified damages over some pretty unpleasant allegations.

Jones was employed by the store from July 2011 to July 2012, according to a TMZ report, and during her tenure amassed a laundry list of complaints against her supervisor, Ann Oliver, and fellow employees. Most unsettling are the claims that her coworkers took frequent and vocal issue with her race and sexuality. In her suit, Jones states that they dropped racial epithets, instructed customers not to work with her because she identified as a bisexual, and insulted Jones’ girlfriend by calling her “the thing that comes to visit her at work.” Oliver apparently regularly asked Jones, who is black, if she would be having fried chicken for lunch. And a local CBS report says that Jones also accused a male manager of intentionally leaving inappropriate photos of himself on a company computer.

If the accusations are true, then it’s no surprise why Jones cut loose after a year, and she cites the unbearable working conditions as her reason for ultimately quitting.

This lawsuit comes on the heels of Burch settling a contentious year-long dispute with her former husband that resulted in the sale of his shares of her company. The financial coup means Ms. Burch could probably afford Jones’ damages and then some, but she’s not personally named in the suit. Here’s hoping that the claims are false — but if not, someone may want to do a little housecleaning at the Beverly Hills store.
