Tyra Banks is a busy lady! Not only is she still doing the America’s Next Top Model thing, she just launched her own online magazine called Type F and she’s enrolled in Harvard Business School‘s executive education division’s Owner/President Management program. (By the way, she’s paying $31,000 per year for three three-week sessions over the course of three years. She is also living in the Harvard dorms.) New York Magazine recently hung out with Tyra, and the resulting profile (and outtakes!) do not disappoint. Enjoy!
On her true career ambition:
I actually studied with [L.A. improv theater company] the Groundlings. I was going to be a sketch comedian, hence the [adopts exaggerated fashionista voice] ‘Fa-Fa-Fa Fashion’—the characters and stuff? I was going to be a recurring star on Jamie Foxx’s show. Not In Living Color—there was one he had called Deez Nuts.
On helping out her fellow students at HBS:
I’ve given them lessons on how to brand themselves. I’ve helped some of my classmates on how to strategize to get to the next level of their businesses. And it’s interesting, because here I am sitting there from the entertainment industry and the fashion industry, and I’m giving a billionaire that has a business that’s been in his family for 300 years—I’m giving him advice about strategy! Or how to penetrate the American market! I didn’t know how much I really knew.
On being commercial:
I’m not the high-fashion girl inside. So I was walking in the runways of Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent and Dior and all the other top designers of the world and the Vogues and the Bazaars and all that globally, but I always still felt intimidated, which is interesting. Karl Lagerfeld is dressing me, Yves Saint Laurent is like smoothing my hem or something, and I felt like a little teenage girl and that these amazing designers were around me and that they were like these Greek gods. So I knew it wasn’t my truth. Although I was, like, flattered and like, “Oh, this is amazing!”
