How Many Crystals Are USA Women’s Gymnastics’ Leotards Encrusted With?

Did you see the women’s gymnastics team final yesterday? The leotards the Americans wore were SHINY. Like, disco ball-level shiny.

Gone are the days of crushed velvet; gymnasts have been trading in those outfits for ones made out of a fabric called Mystique, which is essentially colorful nylon spandex covered with foil dots to create a metallic, molten look. It also helps to keep the athletes from sweating buckets, because it’s much lighter than the velour of yesteryear.

But what really creates that disco ball look? An insane amount of crystals. FUN FACT: One of the leotards worn by the U.S. women’s gymnastics team features a whopping 4,437 Swarovski crystals. And considering how tiny most gymnasts are, that’s got to cover a lot of surface area on those leotards. Still, they’ve got nothing on Beyoncé.
