How Your Vanity Fair Best Dressed List Sausage Is Made

As it turns out, Vanity Fair‘s International Best Dressed List is, well, exactly as fancy and complicated as we thought it was.

The good people at Fashionista recently got their hands on an packet sent to one of 2,000 members of the list’s committee, which Vanity Fair editor-in-chief Graydon Carter describes as a group “fashion authorities … with the daily opportunity to see fashion at its best.” Why we’re not members of this committee yet, we’ll never understand.

But when we are finally called to cast our vote for this prestigious list, we’ll get a letter from Carter himself, explaining the august responsibility of carrying out the tradition CFDA founder Eleanor Lambert started in 1940.

The magazine sends a group of suggested style stars to the people in the polling group (whose membership is kinda secret, but includes some people who’ve made the list in the past), asking them to select each year’s initiates from that group. Those polled can suggest people be added to the list of nominees, and they are also asked to select new members for the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame, a lifetime appointment honoring rich, famous people who just look really good in their clothes.

The clincher is that they have to make their selections and email or fax the super official ballots back to Vanity Fair within a week. There’s probably some method to that accelerated madness, but this list changes lives. So when we’re on the committee, we’re gonna motion for a little more time to make the decision.

Until then, check out the fancy stationery and font that people like Count Manfredi della Gherardesca and Sofia Coppola get to ogle every year — and check out the rest of the packet as well as some interesting musings over at Fashionista.
