Vogue‘s annual Best Dressed issue has a “Style Across America” theme for 2012, a wise choice with all of the Election-inspired patriotism in the air these days. Of course, that means no Kate Middleton this time around, but we guess Vanity Fair already has her covered.
The cover image, tweeted by @SupermodelScans, is an outtake from Emma Stone‘s July Vogue shoot with Mario Testino, and features the actress grinning ear-to-ear in a quilted dress from Proenza Schouler Fall 2012 collection. While the shot doesn’t particularly scream Americana, the sartorial stars chosen by the glossy are 100% homegrown.
And, diverse citizenry that we are, that means that Michelle Obama and Kate Upton both have the honor of earning Anna Wintour‘s seal of approval, despite the former favoring elegant Jason Wu frocks and the latter preferring assless shorts, too-lewd-for-YouTube bikinis, or pairs of strategically-placed American flags.
Joining the unlikely pair are Solange Knowles, who made the cut for the second year in a row (the 2011 issue was sibling-themed, so no surprise there), Vogue favorite Rooney Mara, Kristen Stewart, and newbies like Azealia Banks and Lana Del Rey.

this is some kind of spaceship or something.
