Was Jason Wu Worried About Inaugural Ball Wardrobe Mishaps?

It was a collective gasp of approval heard round the world when Michelle Obama stepped onto the stage at the Inaugural Ball wearing her floor-length, brilliant red Jason Wu gown. But for the designer, it might have sounded a bit more like a sigh of relief.

Wu reiterated to an audience of his supporters, who convened for a victory dinner at the Beatrice Inn on Thursday night, that he wasn’t certain the first lady would opt for his dress, as any number of last minute mishaps could have set her in a different direction.

Michelle paired the dress with Jimmy Choos and sparkly bracelets, and melted our hearts in a tender first dance to Al Green with her husband. And it was quite a coup for Wu, who was thrust quickly into the fashion spotlight just a few years ago after Mrs. Obama chose another of his designs for her first inaugural ball.

“Zippers do break,” he quipped in reference to the uncertainty. Hopefully not so easily on thousand-dollar couture gowns.
