The fashion world collectively freaked out when David Bowie released the video for “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)” with Tilda Swinton and Bowie himself playing an old couple with “a nice life,” (as she says in the supermarket). A nice life, which is tossed asunder by Andrej Pejic and Saskia De Brauw — maddening celebrity paramours who look oddly like Swinton and vintage Bowie, and cause all types of rock-star partying, breaking-and-entering chaos.
We can all gasp and shriek once again, because the next Bowie mini-movie is here, and it’s basically a dream (nightmare?) come true. The video for The Next Day, which Vogue reports was directed by photographer and filmmaker Floria Sigismondi, finds Marion Cotillard at a bar, looking not unlike Helena Bonham Carter in Les Miserables, playing a prostitute who dances herself into convulsive fits. A prophetic Bowie performs in robes to the dismay of a priest (Gary Oldman ), while a topless dancer in a bridal veil and a lady with insane, chin-length eyelashes look on.
See all the gory, star-dusty insanity for yourself:
