Why Victoria’s Secret Models Rule The Runway

Our industry-specific Power Grid is less than one day old, but it’s already shedding some interesting light on what it means to be a top model in today’s world.

Of the top ten models ranked in our grid, six are Victoria’s Secret models, three are supermodels of the old-school ilk, and one is a very lonely Agyness Deyn holding down the high-fashion court of new faces.

It appears that despite the pomp and circumstance of traditional runway shows, commercialization is still king when it comes to modeling. Victoria’s Secret contracts have long been considered the holy grail of modeling paychecks, but agents are often wary of the over-exposure such a lucrative and heavily-promoted arrangement can cause.

Lately, though, it’s become more and more possible for these women to strut the line between high-fashion and mass-market. Jessica Stam, Doutzen Kroes, and Chanel Iman are all examples of a new crop of Angels whose couture credibility stayed strong in the face of Big Branding.

But the bottom line, at least according to our metrics, is that press is best. Naomi Campbell, who is well into her second decade in the industry, still manages to top the list — no doubt due to her recent, if dropped, driver-bashing charges. We can’t help but think she’s not complaining.
