Ah, Wimbledon. Fresh-cut grass. Crisp white clothing. Expensive product placement. What more could you ask for on an English summer’s day?
Apparently, a lot more. Because in England, designers and fashion houses are spending millions of British Pounds Sterling — not American dollars — to dress the tournament’s female players while they tear up the sod.
The Times of London reports that collectively, clothing sponsors have put a record five million pounds (about $7.4 million) into the clothes top female players will wear.
Stella McCartney, for example, dressed Danish player Caroline Wozniacki for Adidas.
“It was really important to show real women working out and showing their bodies, and to marry the two worlds, fashion and sport, which is what the collaboration is all about,” McCartney told The Times.
Nike designers created dresses for both Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams. Sharapova will play in something called the Lawn Rose dress, with fabric layered like the petals in a rose. Williams will wear a white dress with red piping called the Control Lawn dress, inspired by the Wimbledon tradition of snacking on strawberries and cream.
It’s a lot of money to spend on clothing, so we hope the investments will be well worth it. We also hope that red piping won’t upset Wimbledon’s strict all-white rule — otherwise, Serena will end up playing in a pretty plain shirt.
“We keep a selection of plain white shirts in the referee’s room and if an umpire decides a player is breaking the code when they remove their tracksuit they can be asked to change,” a Wimbledon spokesman told The Times.
But whatever she wears, it’ll be better than that time her sister wore this.
