In the 1930 film Morocco, Marlene Dietrich raised eyebrows by gender bending in a sharp black tuxedo. Her ensemble’s pièce de résistance was her white bow tie, and since then she has been an emblem for women taking on the borrowed-from-the-boys neck accoutrement. You might recall Madonna’s Dolce & Gabbana tux getup from earlier this summer, top hat et all, as proof of just this.
While androgynous fashion has come a long way since Dietrich’s heyday, bow ties aren’t exactly a wardrobe mainstay for women. Although, every now and then we’ll catch the menswear staple on some of the most daring female stars, often coming courtesy of Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel or even those sexed-up Dolce & Gabbana boys. On some of our favorite ladies’ looks, we’ve seen bow ties as the cherry on top of a menswear-inspired suit, an accessory to a ladylike white dress shirt, and even sewn into a figure-hugging midi dress.
In honor of National Bow Tie Day, we’ve assembled some of our most favorite femme bow tie moments that have us studying bow-tying video tutorials and delving into our grandfather’s archives for fashion week.
this is some kind of spaceship or something.
