You Can Learn a Lot About Body Confidence From American Apparel’s 62-year-old Model

Jacky O'ShaughnessyAmerican Apparel loves to push boundaries, so it’s safe to say we never really know what their next ad campaign or store window will hold. The latest model to don a lace bandeau bra and undies for the brand was discovered in a New York City restaurant. She also happens to be a 62-years-old woman with a toned body and long flowing hair. They weren’t wrong when they captioned the photo, “Sexy has no expiration date.”

American Apparel’s latest muse, Jacky O’Shaughnessy, chatted with Elle about the shoot that captured the nation’s attention, proving age is only a number.

“[When] I was handed the lace underwear, it was like, yeah, sure, let me have it,” O’Shaughnessy said to the magazine. “Want me to sit on this stool? Fine. Legs in the air? Great, lets go.”

O’Shaughnessy admitted she wasn’t always so game when it came to her appearance.

“Like anyone, I have had aspects of my body that I have been not pleased with since I was 13,” she said. “When I grew up, the models of my day were Veruschka, Twiggy, and I remember very clearly a shot of Diana Ross and she was in a pair of jeans and a white t-shirt and she was absolutely skeletal. And I remember thinking ‘Oh, I want to look like that, I don’t want an ounce of fat on my body.’”

Confidence and wisdom clearly come with age, and that is probably why O’Shaughnessy is able to focus on the positive responses to her photos rather than the few negative ones.

“When I look at the most critical, it’s very young women, not guys, yet very young women are also some of the biggest proponents. The amount of negativity is so small compared to the positive reactions.”
