AE Will Give You A Free Phone If You Try On Their Jeans
Until today, we completely forgot that the back-to-school shopping season is just weeks away, which means we’ll have to mark our calendar for the days to avoid stepping into the teen-riddled stores. But thanks to American Eagle Outfitter’s recent sale promotion announcement, looks like that day starts on the 21st of this month.
From July 21 to Aug 3, the popular mall retailer will be offering customers a little treat in exchange for trying on a pair of jeans. No, it will not be a jelly wallet, nor AE frisbees — though certainly a predictable choice — instead, the company will be giving away smart phones. Participating customers will be able to choose from 40 phones from brands including Blackberry, LG and HTC — Apple, unfortunately, is not included.
Before you can imagine giddy high schoolers running home to their parents to flash their new Blackberry Bolds, there is a catch to all this: with the new phone, customers must sign-up for a 2-year service plan with one of the participating carriers, including AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile. To make this catch sound less binding to some wallets, the store will throw in a $25 AE gift card if a plan is chosen before Sept 30.
According to Fred Grover, the brand’s executive vice president of marketing, this seemingly pricey promotion “adds a level of excitement and fun to our customers’ shopping experience, as well as making a powerful statement about our confidence in the denim collection.”
Market Watch explained that for customers to reap the benefits, they will be given a card that will give them online access to chose their phone and plans. Both the phone and gift card will be shipped via FedEx. It’s a great move on American Eagle’s part to combine teenagers’ natural need for a new, shiny texting weapon and a perfect pair of jeans, though we have to admit: it seems a little desperate.
