THE GOODS: BracedLets (Almost) Make Braces Look Cool

We see a lot of cool product in the course of doing our job (which, we’ve said before, involves a lot of shopping). So it only made sense to us that we should share it with our readers. Welcome to The Goods, a section where we share the best of what we’ve seen, so you can know what to look for when you head out to shop.

We don’t have the fondest memories of wearing braces (that’s an understatement; wearing braces sucked), but we have finally fulfilled our dream of finding an accessory that would help us laugh at the excruciating torture of dental appliances. Say hello to BracedLets, fun bracelets made of the same materials that helped correct your massive overbite when you were a teenager.

The nifty little accessories are the brainchild of Drs. Marc Lemchen and Jennifer Salzer, both recognized orthodontists in New York City. Jennifer happens to be the sister of jewelry designer Lisa Salzer, creator of the jewelry line Lulu Frost, so of course the two ended up working together on making the concept a reality. The sisters told us in an email that they’re excited to combine their talents, given that “under normal circumstances it is pretty hard to find a way to combine orthodontics with jewelry design.”

The BracedLets, which have only been on sale for a few weeks now, have proven almost as popular as Lisa’s main collection — and she credits their popularity with their unconventional design.

“I bet back in the 1850s no one thought ‘Hey these shoe buckles will make great cuff bracelets!’” Lisa wrote. “Same things with power chains and elastic rubber bands, just a new time period.”

And at $5 a pop, it’s no surprise that the bracelets already seem to be selling like hotcakes. You can find them at Opening Ceremony, Fred Segal, Ron Robinson, Ricky’s and online at BracedLets.com
