Christian Lacroix To Collaborate With Desigual
Designer Christian Lacroix is collaborating on a capsule collection for the Spanish brand Desigual. But he can’t call it Christian Lacroix for Desigual because he lost the rights to use his own name in the bankruptcy meltdown that cost him his couture business.
So instead he’s calling the line Monsieur Lacroix. It will be his first collection of clothes since his eponymous house was turned into a marketing operation last year. WWD reports the first collection will include about 30 pieces, ranging from lingerie to jackets and skirts, and will be followed up with a larger collection for summer 2012.
But working with a well-known brand — however unnecessarily expensive its clothes may be — isn’t much a consolation prize for a man who wowed the fashion industry with his passionate palate of colors and intellectual references to history and art. Then again, for a man who never once managed to turn a profit in his 22 year career as the force behind LVMH’s best couture operation, maybe he didn’t really have an option? But if Desigual can avoid the management problems that sent Lacroix’s business into a downward spiral, maybe this could be the beginning of a beautiful — and hopefully profitable — business arrangement.
