I'm also a huge designer denim snob. Right now Stella McCartney, Twenty8Twelve, True Religion, and Current/Elliott are all in heavy rotation. But, I've found that mall store Express makes the best fitting skinny jeans. They are seriously amazing-- just skinny enough, sized a bit bigger through the thigh and calf, and available in long lengths.

@Quigs Levi's is actually the one "inexpensive" brand I haven't tried. Though I do like their shorts...Maybe you're on to something! And maybe you've found your true calling: Styleite's Denim Specialist. Want your own advice column?

@MKG: J Brand. Every style BUT the ones they sold on Gilt Groupe a while back. Those were strangely stretchy and I don't need to reiterate how I feel about too much stretch. Also: Paige denim. And right now I'm wearing a pair of brand-spanking-new Hudson's that I'm really into. They're also some serious vanity-sizers: I was a full size, almost two sizes, smaller in these than any other pair. On second thought, that might be why I love these so much. Oh well.

I suppose women's jeans are finickier, but what do you think of plain old Levi's? Pretty classic, & a lot of different cuts; Capital E's if you want to go a little more upscale, but you can still get them below $100.
