PHOTOS: Derek Lam’s eBay Collection Is Just A Little Boring
The dresses with the most votes in Derek Lam‘s crowd-curated diffusion collection for eBay are going to production. And as we predicted back in October, other than their novelty for being part of the first group of designer clothes the Internet has voted into salability, the clothes are a touch boring.
EBay opened up the voting for these dresses just after they were shown at New York Fashion Week in mid-February. People all over the country voted and picked their favorites: two dresses in a print fabric, two in a solid gray cotton and another in a chemise that might as well be the same solid gray cotton.
That’s not to say the pieces aren’t good work. There’s a great halter-top shift dress for $175, a full-length black-tie gown for $275, a full-length printed dress for $295, a short sleeved dress in the same print for $195 and a chemise dress for $225. They’re all great pieces, and they’re pretty well priced for being Derek Lam (the man’s skirts can cost up to $900).
We just wish the voting public had cast its net a little wider, is all. There was a white floor-length shirt dress that would have been the perfect backdrop for summer accessories. There was also a gamine a-line dress in dark gray that would have been a lot more flattering on a wider variety of women than, say, a tiered dress in beige-and-dusty rose calico.
Anyway, that’s just what we think. Do you see anything below that you’ll be buying for summer? The clothes come in sizes 0 through 16, and they’ll be on pre-order starting April 10. Regular orders will start May 10.
