Horrible Forever 21 Shirt Declares Girls Are ‘Allergic To Algebra’

First JCPenny told girls that they were too pretty to do homework (and that their brothers should do it for them), and now Forever 21 is telling them they’re “allergic to algebra”. This sucks.

We like to think now is a pretty awesome time to be a girl. The opportunities and role models girls are privy to rule. And as Tavi knows, being a teenage girl is special. But then we see that Forever 21 — a store beloved by tweens, teens, and grown ladies like ourselves — has a shirt that actually tells girls they are ALLERGIC TO ALGEBRA. Declaring that girls don’t or shouldn’t like math perpetuates the idea that women cannot excel in the sciences or mathematics. Not okay.

We wonder what the girls buying F21′s college apparel (with a healthy smattering of Ivy League representation!) think. Chances are they won’t be pairing their Harvard gym shorts with an Allergic to Algebra tee.

Of course what makes this campaign even more offensive is if the line carried the adage Hungry for Algebra for a guys line no one would be the wiser because once again it’s a boy’s role to be smart and the bread winner. So much for equality for the sexes, never mind a backward thinking fashion line.http://scallywagandvagabond.com/2011/09/forever-21-wants-to-let-young-girls-know-that-they-are-too-prettystupid-to-bother-with-algebra/

Stop being so sexist, just because it’s a girls shirt doesnt mean guys cant wear it!

But seriously arent there better things to be outraged by? I vaguely remember learning algebra, and if they had this shirt back then I wold have worn it. It’s funny, its a joke, calm down!

i think it is funny… hate the color pink  but the shirt could be for male or female and that is how they should market it. I hated math and algebra sucks big time to me.

if you don’t like the shirt, don’t buy it. I’m a math major and I wouldn’t mind having a shirt that says allergic to algebra.

why do people take these small things so seriously!? i mean c’mon i hate algebra, i’d totally buy that shirt! its just a humorous shirt! feminists’ need to CALM DOWN. by paying attention to all these unnecessary things they just make women look bad as a WHOLE! don’t tell me what i can’t and can wear!

No, it’s people like you who perpetuate memes like this one. “Hey girls – people will hate us if we try and point out how we’re being demeaned!  Much better to look pretty and be agreeable!”  Jeez.

The point is not that some girls don’t like algebra.  The point is that no one would create a man’s shirt that said that.  Because a man would be embarrassed to admit they are bad at math.  The maker of this shirt assumes that a girl would be proud of her academic failings.  Which is dumb.  Why should women feel like academic failings are something to be so proud of that we emblazon them on a shirt?

Thanks to people like you I’ve been treated like a “little girl” in my computer science job and have had to work twice as hard to be taken seriously. THANKS.
