Lanyard (a.k.a. Gimp) Makes A Comback On Shopbop

Last summer my friend came across a photoshoot featuring a model wearing a series of friendship bracelets around her wrist. For anyone that attended summer camp, you can probably relate to our reaction to the spread: instant reminsicing. In an effort of deal with our nostalgia of jewelry trends past, my friend dusted off her box of colored string, bought some new fresh colors, and within a few days, our wrists were decorated.

Candy Stripe, Chevron Pattern, Hearts…if any of these words mean anything to you, or bring back memories of color coding a plastic box of string or lanyard, you’ll be pleased — or maybe confused — to know that Shopbop, like my friend, has decided to bring back the friendship bracelet, but in an even more iconic iteration: lanyard. (Ed Note: Also known as Gimp, also known as plastic lacing!)

But instead of a friendship bracelet, Brette Sandler Swimwear has called it a “Waterproof Rope Bracelet.” Rope? Let’s call it like it is, people. That’s lanyard. (Ed Note: Gimp!) We know it when we see it. The bracelet, priced at $28, is braided just like ours were during the summer of ’95. Only difference is the fancy gold clasp, which personally, we could do without.

If the Brette Sandler Swimwear Waterproof Rope Bracelet — a.k.a. a lanyard box stitch bracelet (Ed Note: it’s a Gimp bracelet!) — makes you itch for some friendship bracelet wrist love, we found this awesome site that can help jog your pattern-making memories.

(Final Ed Note: In case you didn’t notice, I grew up calling this plastic stuff “Gimp” which is a much more appropriately hilarious and childlike term than “lanyard.” Lanyard sounds fancy, like the kind of rope they use on sailboats moored in Connecticut. Or something. Anyway, point made.)
