The Gap Ups The Ante (And The Prices) With CFDA Collabs
While we all appreciate a chance to get up close and personal with our designers, let’s be serious. We’re always more interested in clothes. Especially the limited edition, accessible-for-all, get them while they’re at your local mall kind. So like everyone else, we’ve been itching for a peek at the collections from the winner’s of this year’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund created in exclusive collaboration with The Gap. You know, the one that last year introduced Alexander Wang to the wonderful world of khaki. Well, itch no more. Today designs from the likes of Monique Péan, Patrik Ervell and Sophie Theallet will be unveiled at a special pop-up shop at the Gap’s Fifth Avenue store and from the looks of things, they are as covetable as ever. Think floaty summer time frocks, skirts and tops for the girls; blazers, T-shirts, jeans and button-down shirts for men, along with eco-friendly necklaces and bracelets — all an articulation of the designers personal aesthetic paired with the retailer’s signature jeans and tees take.
The only problem: It’s a little on the pricey side. For example, a pair of Ervell’s railroad stripe jeans will run you about $250 bucks while a pearl encrusted button down costs $188.
“They all feel very Gap to me,” Ervell said. Sure, minus the price tag. And no break for the girls either–Theallet’s tiered dresses and skirts range from $200-$250. She notes the designs aren’t a whole heck of a lot different from those in her regular line, but are constructed from fabrics with a “more accessible” price point, such as cotton. We’ll hand it to her. It’s less than you would normally pay for one of Theallet’s togs, but this is the Gap we’re talking about, the supposed poster child of democratic fashion! And there’s just something about a $200 shirt that doesn’t feel overly democratic to me.
