Gilt City Gives Us Cheapskates Another Pleasure
Love it or hate what it does to your bank account each month, Gilt Groupe is a force to be reckoned with. And lately it seems the successful sample sale e-tailer has been itching to branch out and expand their cheaper than thou stake with its recent hiring tear and iPad application launch.
So we can’t say we’re all that surprised by the news that the e-commerce juggernaut has its sights set on coupons — or should we call them Groupons?
Confused? If you haven’t heard of it (or become completely addicted) Groupon is a fast growing start-up that’s made coupons cooler than the frozen food aisle by using collective buying power to make everything from mani-pedis to Mai-Tais a lot cheaper.
Always quick to eye an opportunity, word is Gilt has jumped on the bargain bandwagon and in the last few days has been sending some members invitations to Gilt City — an exclusive listing of weekly deals on goods and services throughout New York. Modeled much like Groupon, the site seems to be about bringing buyers and sellers together in a way that offers the consumer an unbeatable deal. ”New Yorkers demand to live well,” the site explains, “And Gilt City lets you go to town.” Our curiosity is piqued — talk about a new guilty pleasure!
The service has only been launched in New York for now, but we have no doubt Gilt has plans to expand very soon.
