Worst T-Shirt Of All Time Tells Little Girls That Being Smart Sucks

Oh, man. There is no worse way to start the morning than to be introduced to what is arguably the worst shirt of all time. Ever.

A friend of ours tweeted a link to said girls’ shirt, which is on sale at JCPenney for $9.99. The text on the tee reads: “I’m too pretty to do homework so my brother has to do it for me.” Wait, it gets worse! The website copy goes on to explain: “Who has time for homework when there’s a new Justin Bieber album out? She’ll love this tee that’s just as cute and sassy as she is.”

I MEAN, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Yes, let’s tell little girls that being smart isn’t cool. Let’s tell them they can’t possibly be pretty and smart. Let’s tell them they need a boy do their homework for them. Let’s tell them they should be cute and sassy, but never ever smart. Because, ew, being smart is for losers. Besides, who wants good grades when you can just listen to Bieber on repeat?

UPDATE: Change.org has started a petition asking JC Penney to remove the shirt. You can sign it here.

UPDATE #2: JC Penney has responded.

J.C. Penney is committed to being America’s destination for great style and great value for the whole family. We agree that the “Too pretty” t-shirt does not deliver an appropriate message, and we have immediately discontinued its sale. Our merchandise is intended to appeal to a broad customer base, not to offend them. We would like to apologize to our customers and are taking action to ensure that we continue to uphold the integrity of our merchandise that they have come to expect.

best part? they suggest pairing it with a sweatshirt from their “self esteem line” ….seriously. what kind of parent would purchase this; and what kind of purchasing /marketing team would approve this??? i thought the days of “I’m too pretty to do math” were behind us. so sucky. nice job, jc penney. gross.

  • Rfensty

I clicked the link, and the product has been removed from the website.

This is insane! well thank you JC Penney for seeking to profit on the decimation of childrens’ desires to strive for academic excellence. how obscene.

I hope parents aren’t buying that shirt. We have to stop giving young girls the message that being smart is for ugly girls. Do better.

  • http://www.facebook.com/sherribrandt Sherri Brandt

I know someone who’d buy that shirt for her daughter.  Sad.  Might as well say, “im 2 stoopid 2 do homewerk. weres my welfare check”

  • Marcus

There isn’t even a new Justin Bieber album out!

  • Anonymous

Wha’TF? They discontinued the shirt!  Why the heck did they produce it in the first place? Now, will they send it to third world countries as an act of American pride?

  • Bikerk

At least Penney’s had the good sense to stop selling them, but only after people protested. I agree with Marilync “why the heck did they produce it in the first place?”   I thought we had evolved past this 50′s girls-can’t-be-smart shit.

  • peaceful

U know what? Im not saying, I told you so…but months ago, there was an article for metal magnets, that read that females dont have to be good at MATH, at Forever 21, remember?? I said then that its wasnt a good idea..now look…and adults, want to hear something scary?? Macys is selling a shirt that says, “youre boyfriend bought me this tshirt on it!!”  Luckily, its on major sale, so no many have bought it…I’m so sorry for the, “I have to take urs, and my parents didnt teach me right” culture…very sad…

  • Epagelhogan

I don’t know…part of thinks… there are a lot of women who are smart enough to know that guys are dumb enough to do anything for a good-looking girl. Lots of women take advantage of that fact. Their lives are often made easier by that fact. I’m not saying I’d buy it for my daughter, but I might wear it myself.

  • Epagelhogan

*whoops forgot a word “Part of ME thinks…”

  • http://twitter.com/nickrunner Nick Bezuidenhout

You are assuming that little girls are so stupid that they won’t get the joke on the T-shirt. They aren’t.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ROQEP6O2WVGYQLGDADENKBWJQM Anonymous

Y’know, if it’s her brother she gets to do her homework by being so pretty, there may be other problems in the household. Just sayin’….

  • Cedarblu

    hahahahahaha! so awesome.

  • Cedarblu

@peaceful – i had no idea that those existed. so wrong on so many levels.

  • http://billschmalfeldt.com Bill Schmalfeldt

You shouldn’t create a product designating someone as stupid unless you know for a fact that person is stupid.

    Like I did here…

You just can’t take a joke you clearly don’t have a sense of humor like your pal Peaceful as well. It’s so ridiculous to be outraged over a freaking T-Shirt I take as a joke and I at least have sense of humor you unlike you Cedarblu & Peaceful and all claims which are lies and baseless as well.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SIYF5565LXG7BBKTKGSSFWU7TA The Rock

You clearly don’t have a sense of humor and can’t take a joke all claims are baseless. it’s ridiculous to be outraged which is just a freaking T-Shirt that is just a joke glad I have a sense of humor.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SIYF5565LXG7BBKTKGSSFWU7TA The Rock

All claims which are lies and baseless you clearly don’t have a sense of humor. It’s ridiculous to be outrage over a T-Shirt that is just a joke I would buy it as a joke gift.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SIYF5565LXG7BBKTKGSSFWU7TA The Rock

JcPenny shouldn’t have to pull stuff just because those that clearly don’t have a sense of humor can’t take a joke. And all claims which are lies & baseless it’s ridiculous to be outraged by a freaking T-Shirt that is just a joke.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SIYF5565LXG7BBKTKGSSFWU7TA The Rock

I wouldn’t give it my kid I would only get it as a joke gift I would wear it just to be funny. Glad you have a sense of humor and took it as just a joke like myself.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SIYF5565LXG7BBKTKGSSFWU7TA The Rock

I took it as a joke nothing to take seriously. I would wear just to be funny and give it as a joke gift.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SIYF5565LXG7BBKTKGSSFWU7TA The Rock

I can’t believe some of the comments being outraged by a freaking T-Shirt but I guess some just can’t take a joke or has a sense of humor. I would wear it just to be funny or buy it as a joke gift. I could see this T-Shirt for Spencers Gifts and no one would be outraged since Spencers is known for joke T-Shirts and ridiculous stuff as well. it’s ridiculous to be outrage by a freaking T-Shirt that was only ment as a joke.

    Wahhh.

You can say “it’s just a joke” about anything.  That doesn’t make it immune to criticism.  Some jokes are lame.

  • Anonymous

it would actually be fun on grown ups

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SIYF5565LXG7BBKTKGSSFWU7TA The Rock

Yes does make it immune from criticism since those that are criticising are wrong and just can’t take a joke or has a sense of humor. So that makes me right.

Clearly offensive tshirts are their forte, ugh.

  • Mstarlight

TO THE ROCK: I can’t believe that your life is so lame that you have to spend all of your time retorting to other people’s opinions. For those of us who have young girls, a lot of us are genuinely offended. I know I was. Some people think that being mean or vicious is funny, that’s why there is so much attendance to the issue of bullies in schools.

Repeating your perspective OVER, and OVER and OVER doesn’t make it a truth. Stop being a bully on this comment board.

  • Kim

Tell jokes. Fine. But when a joke relies on a stereotype and reinforces the stereotype, it’s not funny. This t-shirt, as much as it may be a really bad joke, does reinforce a “men are smarter than women” stereotype. By the way, on tests that ask for people’s gender, women statistically score lower than men. No question? No difference. Why reinforce, or even suggest, the stereotype? And maybe adults find it funny, but kids generally don’t develop the linguistic comprehension to understand sarcasm/irony until around 12 years old.

As a female computer scientist who owned all but maybe one or two guys in my CS classes (usually all of them), I am satisfied with my intelligence and my appearance. I think that’s ideal. Nobody has to be drop-dead gorgeous or a rocket scientist, but let’s not give up important parts of our development and identity to fit a gender stereotype. Let’s just be confident with who we are. Being pretty is fine. We can be smart too. They are not mutually exclusive. That’s another flaw in this shirt: it plays off of the idea that beauty and brains are mutually exclusive.
The shirt is just stupid. Let’s not put our sons or daughters in boxes.

Respect for sharing the stuff. That is really opportune because I’m having troubles similar to this, moreover I’m exactly planning trying this for myself.

  • None

to kim: shut up, bitch. never mind your FEMINIST LIES!!!!!!

  • Tim Kline

Clearly The rock is very faught up about this t-shirt ive only read umteen comments that all say the same thing clearly he let boys do his “homework”

  • K.C.

I always thought that, in order for something to be a joke, it actually had to be funny.  Silly me.

I am OUTRAGED and OFFENDED that someone would suggest that my T-Shirt is demeaning to little girls…  OK, now that I’m offended, what can I force someone to do? Can I get an article published… or get some time on TV?  Come on people.  Self esteem does not come from a T-Shirt… it comes from YOU, the P-A-R-E-N-T-S.  If it makes your little girl feel she doesn’t hafta be smart, it’s because of YOU.  You are responsible for your child’s upbringing… not J.C. Penny… unless, of course, you prefer to not accept that responsibility.

  • Anonymous

and dolls and pink tutus don’t?

  • not Kim

The reason that there are FEMINIST is because of disrespectful people such as yourself.

  • Jjstone

We’re so glad you have a sense of humor too! That will make it easier when your kids turn out to have rocks in their head – you’ll just be able to laugh it off when your ignorant girls can’t find a well paying job and keep hitting you up for $ to spend on the latest fashion failure.
