Meet Kara Larson: Shop Owner, Designer And New Gardener
Meet Kara Larson: Shop Owner, Designer and New Gardener.
The overgrown plot connecting the back of two Portland, Oregon, boutiques—Tumbleweed and Grasshopper—might have stayed that way if not for the creativity of its owner, Kara Larson. The designer had a different vision for the tiny parcel, one that would make for a healthier work environment for her staff: a small garden.
Amy Flurry, a regular contributor to The Inside Source, an online style magazine presented by eBay, recently caught up with Larson to talk about her newly discovered green thumb—and the other innovative methods she used to stay afloat during the economic storm.
“I wanted to keep morale up and the garden was a big part of that,” says Larson. From a business standpoint, she decided that instead of increasing her purchases at Tumbleweed, she would produce more dress styles for her own label, Kara-line. Next door at Larson’s children’s shop Grasshopper, she applied the same sort of personal touches: “We buy in small quantities and we recycle everything possible,” she explains. “We even put out our dress fabric remnants in little bundles for young customers to take and make clothes for their dolls.”
Perhaps the only fleeting pleasure in Kara Larson’s charming world is the few sprigs of lavender plucked from the garden out back and used to top every wrapped purchase from her enchanting shops.
