Was Margiela For H&M Too ‘Fashion Forward’ To Sell?

Apparently not everyone wants a dress with a few extra arms or a pair of jeans with room enough for two.

Page Six reports that the Margiela for H&M collaboration is “tanking” at stores, positing that high prices (the collection ran up to $399 for certain pieces) and excess merchandise production may have been to blame. Or, of course, it may just have been “too fashion forward” for the retailers usual shoppers.

When they contacted H&M, however, the company claimed to be “very happy by [its] customers’ positive response,” explaining that “[Our] philosophy is to provide fashion for everyone at affordable prices. For Margiela, H&M offered this collection in larger volume.” We’ll have to wait and see if next time (for that maybe-Givenchy collab) they’ll decide to rethink that strategy.

It was not an appealing collection–it just didn’t make sense for fast fashion.

  • corporate fashion disaster

the collection had no market, as real margiela fans have fled the brand since diesel began turning it another predictable corporate fashion label after martin left in 2008 (or 2009 – diesel has carefully tried to hide the exact date). And new shoppers just thought the stuff wasn’t nice, so h&m is now almost giving the product away. A disaster

I saw it, both men’s & women’s and it sucked, awful silhouettes, high prices for what it was and didn’t look appealing. The racks we all full, full nothing had been taken from them at all since they were brought out. Only thing that looked touched were the women’s shoes with the clear wedge heel, that’s it! You couldn’t pay me to wear any of it, it is plain awful, awful!
