Nike Claims ‘Gold Digging’ T-Shirt Was Meant To Be ‘Ironic’

After we came across Nike‘s ‘Gold Digging’ T-shirt on an online shopping site earlier this week, we were, to say the least, unimpressed. As such, we emailed the company for comment, asking what their thinking was during the design process and whether they had anticipated any such backlash.

The following is the spokesperson’s response:

Nike has consistently supported female athletes and the position they enjoy as positive role models. The t-shirt uses a phrase in an ironic way that is relevant given it was released just as the world focused on the success of female athletes.

We reached out again yesterday to ask why the shirt, if it is as “ironic” as the company claims it is, is not offered in men’s sizes as well, and will update if we receive a response.

You guys are morons. No one would get the joke if it were a men’s shirt. It’s flipping the term Gold Digger into a positive term – saying that women aren’t going after a man’s money; they are doing great things on their own. Don’t be so friggin’ stupid and sensitive.

I definitely think you’re taking it the wrong way, and making way too big of a deal out of it. I thought it was very clever.

    Get a life.
