QVC Mines The Smithsonian For A Jewelry Collaboration

They say opposites attract but as far as odd couplings go, this one made us scratch our heads and ask, “Is she really going out with him, er — it?”  We’re talking, of course, about the latest in fashionable bed-fellows: QVC and the Smithsonian Museum. Yes, you read that right. Word, to the delight of housewives everywhere, is the get-it-while-it’s-hot shopping giant has teamed with the iconic musee to produce a range of blinged out baubles inspired by the National Gem and Mineral Collection at the National Museum of Natural History. Apparently, at least sartorially speaking, nothing is sacred anymore. But these aren’t just any old gift-store variety paper weights.

QVC reports that the line — which will start selling this fall — will include reproductions of iconic pieces including the famous deep blue 44.5-carat Hope Diamond and the humongous pear-shaped diamond earrings given to Marie Antoinette during the French Revolution. Quite the conversation pieces, right? Might we suggest packaging each piece with a handy-dandy cheat sheet so that one can casually quote the historical significance of your faux gems over the buffet table. “Could you please pass the Russian dressing? And speaking of Russian dressing…” You get our drift.

Our only real question is who will hawk these jewels? Unfortunately, Elizabeth Taylor has seen better days. But then, Harrison Ford hasn’t done anything in a while. And nothing says rare and historically significant like Indiana Jones.
