PHOTOS: Everything We Want To Buy From The Saks Home Department

Last week we attended the opening of the Saks‘s new home department, which contains everything from truly stunning Baccarat glassware to Mrs. John L. Strong bespoke stationery. There was so much to look at, admire, and not trip over, that we frankly felt a little overwhelmed.

We also couldn’t help but notice that by the time we would be able to afford anything from the home department, we would either be retiring after successful careers as bank robbers and/or be quite old. The benefit of this, of course, is that once one reaches a certain age/level of wealth, one may feel free to ignore any calls for restraint and fill one’s home with the zaniest, most awesome stuff the Saks home department has to offer. And things are pretty zany.

Below are our selections for decorating the imaginary retirement palace of our dreams, or, as we like to call it, the “Red Hat Society Registry”:

I definitely agree on the red chandelier.  It’s a must!

The word GAUDY is right out there, and at a hefty price.  No thanks would not have any of it for FREE.

It’s very sad that Saks had to throw Salon Z under the bus in order to create the space for this home department, which as far as I can see, sells the same mass market luxury items that are available in dozens of other retail establishments.  McKenzie Childs and Herend?  Neiman-Marcus.  Baccarat and Christofle?  Bloomingdales.  Sferra sheets?  Please.  I buy those at an 80% discount at Tuesday Morning.  Salon Z, on the other hand, was the last bastion of designer plus-sizes, and by designer, I do not mean simply some label with name recognition like Michael Kors.  I mean upper end bridge lines like Marina Rinaldi and Lafayette 148.  I even recall a few years ago that the flagship on 5th Avenue, as well as the Beverly Hills store, were carrying a small selection of true designer wares – Chanel, Valentino and Yves Saint Laurent in sizes up to Size 20.   I wish one of their bean counters would figure out how much they are going to lose in sales in *other* departments, from the closure of Salon Z.  I won’t be luxury homegoods in Saks – I no longer have any reason to go to Saks, and I can find those goods elsewhere.
