Selfridges Sort Of Apologizes For McQueen Display

On Friday, we published a photo of an Alexander McQueen window display at the Selfridges outpost in Manchester, England. The display featured a recognizably McQueen design hung from a scaffold with the word “ADORE” emblazoned behind it. For context: Alexander McQueen’s tragic death was a result of suicide by hanging.
We called the McQueen department at the Selfridges store but the employee we spoke to recommended we call their marketing department the next business day — but news of the online outrage against this display got to them before we could. Late Saturday afternoon, London time, the company tweeted what was apparently their apology.
If you didn’t know what “it” or “the dress” was, you’d probably have no idea what they were apologizing for. Which, if you ask us, makes for a pretty crappy apology.
