Time Warp: Cosmo’s 1956 Lane Bryant Ad
Back in the day, and by “day” we mean a good 50 years ago, it was popular for women to shop from the comfort of their own homes. When it was de riguer to have a Sears catalog waiting close at hand on the coffee table, magazines jumped to fill their blank spaces with ads, like the ones we discovered while flipping through a January 1956 issue of Cosmopolitan.
Exhibit A: A Lane Bryant ad. The ad shows that capris were the “it” item for the at-home mother, and depicts a loose silhouette, which stayed true to the Lane Bryant brand. The ad stresses the REEVES “Loni” fabric — guaranteed to withstand the stress of any domestic chore. And did we mention that all items were priced under $7?
Times truly have changed. We wonder what the women in the 1950s ads would have thought about the Lane Bryant commercial that caused all the censorship brouhaha earlier this year.
