If we were to designate a theme to all of Karl Lagerfeld‘s runway shows, it would undoubtedly be “Go Big, Or Go Home,” or maybe just “Perfection.”
At the resort shows, Karl allowed us to vicariously live out our St. Tropez vacation dreams in his elaborate seaside presentation. For the Fall shows, he brought in a gargantuan iceberg to appropriately accessorize a runway full of extravagant Chewbacca-like furs. Why we’re still blown away by Karl’s theatrics is a mystery — we should expect it by now.
But yesterday’s Chanel couture show proved to be yet another jaw dropping stroke of Lagerfeld-genius. In place of Fall’s giant iceberg stood a 40 foot high, 8 ton golden lion, pearl-in-paw, which the models walked around and in between.
Talk about a center piece. Getting even the front row to notice anything other than the giant mass of gold would be a huge feat or any designer. Unless it’s Karl. No prop — even one that weights 8 tons — could keep eyes away from Karl’s gorgeous collection, full of fabulous coats and classic knee-length dresses. He did what he always does best — the classic Chanel look with a modern, Lagerfeld touch, and even an intentional or unintentional nod to the late McQueen (see image 3).
Here are our favorite looks from the Chanel Couture show in Paris. And we offer praise to Mr. Lagerfeld for his finale costume. Who else would cover up the beauty of Baptiste Giabiconi with a giant lion’s head and, yes, make it work?
